Metformin during pregnancy and
lactation
FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and the Australian
Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) have slightly different
classifications for metformin use during pregnancy and lactation |
|
Pregnancy |
Category
B ( FDA ) Category C ( TGA) |
|
Animal reproduction studies have not demonstrated a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Despite the lack of extensive human studies, metformin is often considered safe for use during pregnancy, particularly for women with pre-existing diabetes or gestational diabetes |
Lactation |
Regarding lactation, metformin is excreted into human breast milk in small amounts. While there is limited data on the effects of metformin on breastfed infants, the amount of metformin transferred to breast milk is considered unlikely to be harmful to the infant |
