Tetracycline during pregnancy and lactaton

Tetracycline is generally not recommended during pregnancy or lactation due to potential risks to the developing fetus and infant.

  1. Pregnancy   Category D ( FDA )

                          Category D ( TGA)

  1. Pregnancy:

    • Tetracycline is contraindicated during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters. The use of tetracycline during pregnancy can lead to permanent discoloration of teeth and reversible inhibition of bone growth in the developing fetus.
    • If a pregnant woman requires treatment with an antibiotic, alternative antibiotics that are safer during pregnancy should be considered. It's essential to discuss the risks and benefits with a healthcare provider.
  1. Lactation:

    • Tetracycline can pass into breast milk and may affect bone and tooth development in a nursing infant. Therefore, it's generally recommended to avoid using tetracycline while breastfeeding, especially in infants and young children.
